Where to stay in North Cyprus

Start with what the trip is actually for. If it's a first visit and you want a mix of sightseeing, food, and beach, base in Kyrenia — everything is within about an hour. If it's mainly a beach holiday with children, İskele is easier. If you're here for history, Famagusta saves a lot of driving. If you want quiet and views, the hill villages above Kyrenia. Most people should pick one base and make day trips rather than moving hotels: the island is small enough that changing base rarely saves time.

Kyrenia is the default for good reason. The harbour and old town give you walkable restaurants and evenings, the beach clubs are a short drive along the coast in both directions, and St Hilarion and Bellapais are ten minutes up into the mountains. It also has the widest choice of accommodation, from harbour-adjacent boutique hotels to large resorts on the coast road. If you're only visiting once, or you're not sure what you want, stay here.

West of Kyrenia the coast road runs through Alsancak, Karaoğlanoğlu, and Lapta, and this is where most of the larger resorts and rental villas sit. You get beach access, pools, and sea views, usually with more space than in town, at the cost of needing to drive for dinner. It suits couples and groups who want a base to relax in rather than walk out from — and it's the natural choice if you're renting a villa.

Ten minutes above Kyrenia, villages like Bellapais, Ozanköy, and Çatalköy sit on the mountainside looking out over the coast. Staying here means stone houses, quiet evenings, abbey and sea views, and a very different pace — but you'll drive down for the beach and most restaurants. It's a strong choice for a second visit, for couples, or for anyone who prioritises the view from the terrace.

On the east coast, İskele has the island's longest continuous sand and the shallowest water, backed by a promenade rather than an old town. It's the easiest area for young children, and the accommodation skews to newer resort-style apartments and complexes with pools. The trade-off is that it's about an hour from Kyrenia and the evening scene is quieter — you're here for the beach rhythm, not for going out.

Famagusta suits travellers who care most about history: staying inside or near the walled city means early-evening walks through the old town when the day visitors have gone, with Salamis ten minutes away. Nicosia (Lefkoşa), the capital, is more of a working city than a holiday base, but it's practical if you're here for business, want the island's biggest local dining scene on Dereboyu, or are flying in and out of Ercan, which is about twenty minutes away.

The Karpaz peninsula has a handful of small guesthouses and eco-style places near Dipkarpaz, and staying there is the only way to see Golden Beach and the cape without a three-hour drive each way. But be clear-eyed: facilities are minimal, restaurant choice is very limited, and you will need a car. It's a rewarding one- or two-night addition to a trip, not a base for a week.

Hotels concentrate around Kyrenia and the coast strip and are the simplest option for short trips, with several large resorts offering pools, spas, and casinos on site. Villas are common along the coast west of Kyrenia and in the hill villages — best for groups and families who want space and a private pool, and usually car-dependent. Apartments dominate in İskele and are well suited to longer stays and self-catering. For anything beyond a week, apartments and villas usually make more sense than a hotel room.

A car makes almost every base work better, because the beaches, castles, and villages are spread along the coast and up into the hills. The exception is a short trip based in central Kyrenia, where you can walk to restaurants and use transfers for day trips. If you don't want to drive, stay in Kyrenia town and plan around transfers — and expect Karpaz and the more remote beaches to be difficult without one.
