Best beaches in North Cyprus

This is the main thing to understand about swimming in North Cyprus. Most of the accessible coast near Kyrenia is run as beach clubs: you pay a day entry fee that normally includes a sunbed, and in return you get changing rooms, showers, food and drink, often a pool, and water sports on site. Public and nature beaches are free or close to it, but bring your own shade, water, and food — facilities can be minimal or absent. Neither is better; it depends whether you want a serviced day or an empty stretch of sand.

The coast either side of Kyrenia holds the island's densest run of beach clubs, most within a 10–20 minute drive of the harbour. They're the easiest option if you want a full day by the sea with food, sunbeds, and things to do — and they're where the summer party scene lives.

About twenty minutes east of Kyrenia, Alagadi — widely known as Turtle Beach — is a protected nesting site for loggerhead and green turtles. It's a wide, natural stretch of sand with far fewer facilities than the beach clubs, which is exactly the point. During nesting season parts of the beach are roped off and there are restrictions on night access and lighting to protect the nests. Follow the posted conservation guidance, and ask MERVE for the current season dates before planning an evening visit.

İskele, on the east coast, has the island's longest continuous sand — roughly 25 km, backed by a promenade rather than an old town. The water shelves gently, which makes it the easiest coastline for families with young children and for anyone who wants to walk or swim without navigating rocks. It's about an hour from Kyrenia and twenty minutes north of Famagusta, and it's the area with the most new resort-style apartments.

Famagusta pairs well with a beach day because the sand sits right beside the history. Glapsides is the best-known city beach, an easy sandy stretch with facilities in summer, and Palm Beach sits close to the walled city with views along the coast. Both work as an afternoon after Salamis or the old town rather than a destination in themselves.

The Karpaz peninsula, the long finger of land at the island's north-east tip, holds the wildest coast in North Cyprus. Golden Beach is the highlight — a broad sweep of dune-backed sand with almost nothing built on it, and wild donkeys often wandering nearby. Treat it as a full-day road trip rather than a quick swim: the drive is long, facilities are sparse, and you should bring water, food, and sun cover.

For young children, Long Beach in İskele is the easiest choice — shallow, long, and flat, with a promenade for buggies and plenty of places to eat nearby. The Kyrenia beach clubs are the next best option because pools, shade, toilets, and food are all on site, which matters on a hot day. Karpaz and the wilder nature beaches are better for older kids and teenagers who want space rather than facilities.

The Mediterranean here is warm enough for comfortable swimming from late spring into autumn, with the hottest, busiest weeks in mid-summer — shoulder season is quieter and gentler. A car makes a real difference: the best beaches are spread along the coast and rarely walkable from town. Take shade and water for nature beaches, check whether a beach club charges entry before you settle in, and remember that on protected beaches like Alagadi the conservation rules come first.
