Karpaz peninsula guide

The Karpaz (Karpas) peninsula is the long finger of land reaching north-east from Cyprus, and it is the emptiest, wildest part of the island. There are no resorts here — just a single road running out to the cape past dune-backed beaches, a national park where wild donkeys roam free, small villages, and the Apostolos Andreas Monastery at the very tip. Golden Beach, the most photographed beach in North Cyprus, sits along its southern shore. Treat Karpaz as a full-day road trip rather than a stop.

Top Highlights

  • Golden Beach (Altın Kum) — kilometres of undeveloped, pale-gold sand.
  • Apostolos Andreas Monastery at the cape, a long-standing pilgrimage site.
  • Karpaz National Park, home to the peninsula's free-roaming wild donkeys.
  • Nesting beaches for green and loggerhead turtles.

Nicosia

Nicosia — Lefkoşa in Turkish — is the capital, and the only divided capital city left in the world. A United Nations buffer zone known as the Green Line has run through it since 1974, and you can cross on foot at Ledra Street in a few minutes. The northern half holds the island's best Ottoman architecture: the Selimiye Mosque, a French Gothic cathedral turned mosque, and Büyük Han, the largest and best-preserved caravanserai in Cyprus. It is also where locals actually eat and go out, along the Dereboyu strip.

Top Highlights

  • The world's last divided capital, split by the UN buffer zone.
  • Selimiye Mosque — a 13th-century French Gothic cathedral turned mosque.
  • Büyük Han — the island's largest Ottoman caravanserai, built in 1572.
  • The Ledra Street crossing, walkable in under ten minutes.

The Karpaz peninsula guide Experience

Where Karpaz is and how to plan the drive

The peninsula begins beyond İskele and runs north-east for roughly 80 kilometres to Cape Apostolos Andreas. From Kyrenia the drive to the tip takes around three hours each way, so most visitors either commit to a long single day or stay overnight in one of the small guesthouses near Dipkarpaz. Fill up with fuel before you go, take food and water, and don't count on mobile signal or facilities along the way.

Golden Beach (Altın Kum)

Golden Beach is the reason most people make the drive. It runs uninterrupted for several kilometres along the peninsula's southern shore — fine, pale-gold sand backed by dunes, with shallow clear water and almost nothing built on it. It is one of the least developed long beaches left in the eastern Mediterranean. There are a handful of simple kiosks and basic huts, but no resort infrastructure: bring shade, water, and everything else you need.

The Nicosia Experience

Where Nicosia is and how to get there

Nicosia sits inland at the centre of the island, about 25 km south of Kyrenia over the Beşparmak mountain pass — roughly half an hour by car. Ercan airport is about 20 minutes east, which makes the capital an easy first or last stop. The old city inside the Venetian walls is compact and walkable; the modern districts and the Dereboyu strip spread out around it and are easier with a car or taxi.

The divided capital and the Ledra Street crossing

Since 1974 a United Nations buffer zone — the Green Line — has divided Nicosia between the Turkish Cypriot north and the Greek Cypriot south. It is the only capital city in the world still split this way, and walking up to the line is a genuinely striking experience. The Ledra Street checkpoint is pedestrian and usually takes under ten minutes to cross with a passport, opening onto a pedestrianised shopping street on either side. Check current crossing requirements before you go.
