Nicosia
Nicosia — Lefkoşa in Turkish — is the capital, and the only divided capital city left in the world. A United Nations buffer zone known as the Green Line has run through it since 1974, and you can cross on foot at Ledra Street in a few minutes. The northern half holds the island's best Ottoman architecture: the Selimiye Mosque, a French Gothic cathedral turned mosque, and Büyük Han, the largest and best-preserved caravanserai in Cyprus. It is also where locals actually eat and go out, along the Dereboyu strip.

What Long Beach actually is
Long Beach is not a resort town centre — it is a long, straight stretch of sand below Iskele town (the old village of Trikomo), with new apartment blocks on the land side and a landscaped promenade with walking and cycling paths along the sea. The section nearest the resort developments is the serviced part, with sunbeds, umbrellas, showers, and beach cafes; keep walking and the coastline turns emptier and wilder. The beach itself is municipal and free to enter — you pay only if you take a sunbed.
Swimming and the family beach day
The sea shelves gently here, with a soft sandy bottom and no sudden depth changes close to shore, which is why Long Beach is the default family recommendation on this coast. The comfortable swimming season runs May to October: the water passes 25°C in June, peaks near 29°C in mid-August, and locals stretch swims into the calm 'velvet season' weeks of October.

Where Nicosia is and how to get there
Nicosia sits inland at the centre of the island, about 25 km south of Kyrenia over the Beşparmak mountain pass — roughly half an hour by car. Ercan airport is about 20 minutes east, which makes the capital an easy first or last stop. The old city inside the Venetian walls is compact and walkable; the modern districts and the Dereboyu strip spread out around it and are easier with a car or taxi.
The divided capital and the Ledra Street crossing
Since 1974 a United Nations buffer zone — the Green Line — has divided Nicosia between the Turkish Cypriot north and the Greek Cypriot south. It is the only capital city in the world still split this way, and walking up to the line is a genuinely striking experience. The Ledra Street checkpoint is pedestrian and usually takes under ten minutes to cross with a passport, opening onto a pedestrianised shopping street on either side.
