Kyrenia (Girne) Complete Guide (2026)

Kyrenia is the crown jewel of North Cyprus and for many visitors, it is the entire reason they come. This small harbour town on the northern coast combines natural beauty, rich history, excellent dining, and a vibrant social scene in a setting that feels both intimate and exciting.

The horseshoe-shaped harbour, overlooked by a massive crusader castle and backed by dramatic mountains, is one of the most photographed spots in the entire Mediterranean. But Kyrenia is much more than its harbour.

Getting to Kyrenia

  • From Ercan Airport: 35-45 minutes by car (about 40 km)
  • From Nicosia: 25-30 minutes by car
  • From Famagusta: 1.5-2 hours by car

Most visitors rent a car at the airport or arrange a transfer. Taxis from Ercan to Kyrenia typically cost 800-1200 TL.

Top Things to Do in Kyrenia

Kyrenia Harbour

The harbour is the heart of the town. The crescent-shaped waterfront is lined with restaurants, cafes, and bars. In the morning it is peaceful, with fishing boats bobbing in the calm water. By evening it transforms into a vibrant dining and socialising scene.

Tip: Walk around both sides of the harbour for different perspectives. The eastern arm gives the best view of the castle.

Kyrenia Castle

This imposing castle has been modified by every civilisation that controlled it - Byzantines, Lusignans, Venetians, and Ottomans. Inside, the Shipwreck Museum houses a 2,300-year-old Greek merchant vessel.

Opening hours: 09:00-17:00 (extended in summer) Entry: Small fee

Bellapais Abbey

A fifteen-minute drive up the mountain from Kyrenia brings you to the village of Bellapais and its stunning Gothic abbey. Built by Augustinian monks in the 13th century, the ruins include a beautiful cloister and refectory with views that stretch across the coast.

The village of Bellapais is charming in its own right, with narrow streets, stone houses, and the famous Tree of Idleness cafe.

St. Hilarion Castle

Often called the Fairy Tale Castle, St. Hilarion perches on a mountain peak above Kyrenia. The three levels of the castle require a steep climb, but the views from the top are extraordinary.

Distance from Kyrenia: 15 minutes by car Allow: 2-3 hours including the climb

Kyrenia Mountains (Besparmak)

The Five Finger Mountains rise dramatically behind Kyrenia. Hiking trails range from easy walks to challenging climbs. The mountains are particularly beautiful in spring when wildflowers cover the slopes.
